Choosing an instrument
The instruments we offer change from year to year,
so please contact us for current options

We can almost always offer piano, violin, guitar, ukulele & music theory.
We can usually offer recorder, clarinet, saxophone, flute, singing & trumpet.
Please ask if you don't see the instrument your child wishes to study.

The age & size of your child will affect
which instrument they are physically able to start learning.

As a rough guide:
5 - 7 yrs: piano, violin, guitar, recorder, ukulele
7 - 8 yrs: guitar & clarinet
8+ yrs: saxophone, flute, trumpet & more

Some instruments act as a gateway instrument, making learning
others easier because of similarities in how they are played:
Recorder: flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe & bassoon.
Ukulele: guitar, bass guitar
Clarinet: saxophone, oboe, bassoon
Violin: viola, cello, double bass
Trumpet: trombone, french horn, tenor horn, euphonium, tuba
Getting an instrument
Parents need to provide an instrument for their child.

If you already have an instrument, by all means bring it along to the first lesson.

Otherwise we recommend waiting until you have met the teacher.
Many instruments have different sizes and options, and your new
teacher will be able to provide guidance on what your child needs.

We do not recommend buying a cheap instrument
from Amazon, Wish, or similar websites.

The quality is often so poor the instruments are not playable
and your child will not be able to make a good sound - very discouraging!

There are several reputable music shops in Cambridge
who can assist with purchasing or renting an instrument:
